Resilience-Conquer From Within
Death, trauma, and devastating events are unavoidable circumstances in the world of Emergency medical service (EMS) and hospital personnel. Trauma care injuries, whether accidental or intentional, account for more 10,000 deaths annually, among infants, children and adolescents. Day in and day out we are hyper exposed to the darkest parts of our world whether it be trauma, tragedy, illness, abuse, or neglect. Doctors, nurses, EMS, and other healthcare providers have guidelines, policies, and protocols to deal with most medical and professional aspects of this care, however there is lacking resources on Resilience and its role in our industry. Having Resilience not only enables us to develop mechanisms for managing stress, it will increase your compassion for oneself and convey empathy to our patient and their loved ones.
Stress is defined as a physiological and/or psychological response to a perceived or actual threat. Resilience offers protection from stress. Resilience the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change. While we indisputably all have stress, our ability to be resilient must be addressed, prepared, and maintained in order to preserve our mental and physical wellbeing and ultimately conquering our job-related risk factors of Compassion Fatigue, burnout, and PTSD. By the end of this lecture the participant will have an increase awareness of their own actions. The participant will feel inspired to build their own Resilience Toolbox Kit, improve their own wellness, prevent compassion fatigue, and continue to provide excellent care for others.
