Allen C. Wolfe Jr., MSN, CNS, APRN, CFRN, CCRN, CTRN, CMTE

ASTNA Publications Committee-Former Chair
Patient Transport: Principles and Practices, 6th Edition

Why did you become a transport nurse?

I worked in a level one hospital in Washington, DC and so frequently I would hear overhead on the intercom system “Code Yellow.” I would look out the window of the ICU on the 4th floor and watch the helicopter land and the crews bringing out some sick patients. I knew that is what I wanted to do.

What is it about your job that you enjoy?

In my present role I have the opportunity to influence transport practice. Nothing could be more rewarding.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

International Travel. Going places I have never been and enjoying this amazing world – China, Fiji, Brazil and Switzerland are my favorite.  My bucket list is Vietnam and Cambodia.

Fun fact about you?

I have seen Diana Ross in concert 40 times,  41 is June 22 in Denver.

Why did you become an ASTNA member?

I believe in the organization and believe my voice is important.

Can you share a time when you felt especially proud to work as a transport nurse?

During the pentagon attack in Washington DC – assist and resuscitating patients and watching my colleagues step up to the challenge of a lifetime.

Describe the ideal partner/flight crew member.

Complement each other and anticipates what the other is thinking.

Do you have a patient / transport that you feel changed/impacted how you care for your patients today? Can you relay that story?

Those who don’t know, I was one of the last nurses Jonathan Godfrey saw when he walked out of the ED door to fly home to Richmond with the other members of his flight crew.  Unfortunately, 45 minutes later Jonathan would return to the same ED as a patient and I was the first nurse he saw again when I assisted with his resuscitation and unloaded him off of the police helicopter. We have only talked about the details once one on one, but it has definitely impacted he and I.
