A New Year Message from the ASTNA President

Greetings, ASTNA members. As we say goodbye to 2020 and look towards the horizon of 2021, it goes without saying that this year has been…well, let’s just say “interesting.” COVID-19 has changed the landscape of healthcare and our day to day lives worldwide. As I write this message, we extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Steven Neher’s family, friends, and colleagues. Steven was an integral part of this organization and helped shape it into what it is today. I also wish to extend these same sentiments to others in our industry who have lost loved ones, friends, or colleagues to this virus. May you find peace and comfort. As we continue to care for COVID patients and our “normal” patient populations, please remember to take the time to care for yourselves. So many have stepped up to work extra shifts and even work in different departments to ensure that our workforce stays strong. My hat is off to you for your continued professionalism and dedication to the communities we serve.

With the COVID vaccine available to many of us and on the horizon for others, we’re optimistic for a steady return back to the norms we once knew. ASTNA has worked with IAFCCP and AMPA to bringto our memberships the annual Critical Care Transport Medicine Conference (CCTMC) at the end of March in Orange Beach, AL. We invite everyone to join us for a week of outstanding education, activities, relaxation, and honoring those we have lost…all while maintaining strict social distancing/masking guidelines. It is our hope this conference will get our membership and the membership of our partner organizations back on track in providing evidenced-based education that may help us refine our knowledge and skills, while providing a safe space for networking, comradery, and bonding.

Finally, I want to pay special tribute to the members of this organization. Without you, ASTNA would not be. To our volunteers, I say thank you. Your hard work and dedication has helped this organization thrive and continue our efforts to fulfill ASTNA’s mission of being leaders and experts in transport nursing. We are also excited for the release of our new Pediatric Advanced Transport Course (PATC) that is now available both in-person and online. We also look forward to the release of a second simulation book, the revised Core Curriculum, the new Critical Care Advanced Transport Course (CCATC), and our organization’s continued expansion into Europe.

As we say farewell to 2020, may you all stay safe, stay happy, and take care of yourselves. Here’s to a new year and the celebration of ASTNA’s 40th Anniversary!
