Call for Content Experts
Principles & Practices, 6th Edition and Medical Critical Care, 1st Edition

ASTNA is now seeking ASTNA and IAFCCP members to serve as authors/reviewers/content experts for an upcoming revision of the Patient Transport: Principles & Practices and the development and writing of a brand-new companion text: Patient Transport: Medical Critical Care (working title).

Writers will revise existing chapter content to include the addition or removal of material based on guidance provided by Editors and Project Manager. Revisions should seek to strengthen the content of the text; material in all chapters must be research- and evidence-based and should apply to the field of transport nursing/trauma nursing as a whole, rather than to specific program and/or state/city regulations. Along with revised content, writers will be expected to ensure that references cited are as up-to-date as possible and do not include resources that are more than ~10 years old (except in certain situations, as described below). In other words, references older than 2012 must be updated (or removed/replaced) wherever possible. [The following notes about references are not meant to be complete and exhaustive. Complete instructions and project guidelines will be provided when chapters are assigned to contributors.]

  • References that are more than 10 years old and do not have associated revisions (eg, medical journal articles) should be carefully reviewed for relevancy and timeliness.
    • For example, a reference that was published in 2019 about communicable disease that impact respiratory and cardiac function would not include discussion about COVID-19 and therefore may not necessarily be as timely as a similar reference published in 2021.

  • References that are more than 10 years old should not be used UNLESS considered part of the literature/canon of a particular subject area.
    • For example, in the current edition, a resource from 1912 [Knowlton & Starling] is cited in the “Hot- and Cold-Related Emergencies” chapter. It’s an article from the Journal of Physiology that presents findings on how variations in temperature and BP impact cardiac performance. As the work of Ernest Starling is seminal in the field of medicine, this would be a resource that can be referenced and cited with the revision.

Writers for the new book will be provided with guidance and other materials from the Editors and Project Manager and will research, outline, and write chapters based on development plans. In some cases, content may be relocated from Principles & Practices, 5th Edition to the Medical Critical Care, 1st Edition book. In cases like these, Editors will direct contributors regarding specific content and its appropriate location within one of the two texts.

Reviewers will review chapters once writers have finished their revisions/writing. Reviewers are expected to review chapters for accuracy, relevance, and overall quality, and will be provided with instructions and relevant details that writers were provided, along with guidelines for conducting a thorough peer review of the chapter. Material in all chapters must be research- and evidenced-based and should apply to the field of transport nursing/critical care nursing as a whole, rather than to specific program and/or state/city regulations.

Writers and reviewers will work with the Editors to complete assignments by deadlines provided by the Project Manager.

Please note that the ability of all contributors to meet deadlines and/or immediately communicate delays or problems with assignments is absolutely critical to the success of the project.

Contributors will be expected to be reachable via email for the duration of the project and should respond to communication from Editors and Project Manager within a reasonable timeframe. In addition, it may be necessary to met via teleconference with Editors or writer/reviewer teams; if/when teleconference is necessary, the Project Manager and Editors will make every effort to accommodate contributor schedules.

  • Actively involved as a critical care transport nurse or paramedic
  • Experience with academic research and writing
