ASTNA’s mission is to advance the quality of patient care through commitment to safety and education. We would be remised not to comment on the significant number of tragic incidences that have recently plagued our community. Our heavy hearts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of everyone who has been impacted by the recent losses.
Since December of 2022 our transport community has suffered 10 fatalities and 3 significant injuries. These crashes impact the entire transport industry along with the fire, police and first responders we work alongside every day. We all work together to serve our communities, and we all feel the grief and devastation.
Given the preponderance of these events remain under investigation, we do not want to comment on any specific cause. What we do know is that it is a good time for each of us to look deeply within our individual programs to ensure that we are doing our very best to actively work against known contributing factors.
Risk mitigation should include active and aggressive Air Medical Resource Management (AMRM) programs that address at a minimum.
Real or perceived pressure to complete a transport.
Assertive communication during shift and pre-flight briefings and post-transport debriefings.
Medical crew education around appropriate weather conditions.
Crew resilience and fatigue management
Again, our hearts and thoughts are with the entire industry right now. ASTNA remains committed to the safety of our members and in the coming months will be setting up a Safety Committee comprised of members with a keen interest in looking at how ASTNA may assist in improving the safety of all transport professionals in our industry.
If you know of any way that ASTNA can help, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Stay Vigilant.
