Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to share an important update about your access to the Air Medical Journal, a valuable benefit of ASTNA membership. Driven by a shift in how information is consumed today and a focus on environmentally friendly publishing practices, beginning with the January/February 2025 issue, the Air Medical Journal will transition to an exclusively online format.

ASTNA is committed to maintaining the same exceptional standard of evidence-based, peer-reviewed content for its members and subscribers. Moving to an entirely online format will streamline access to journal articles, ensuring readers can conveniently engage with content from anywhere at any time. This transition allows ASTNA to better align its resources with member priorities while introducing new and diverse channels for highlighting the latest journal updates.  This also provides for more flexibility in page count and inclusion of color photos and figures, as well as the potential for engaging online content. The journal will continue to be published six times annually.

This decision was made with careful consideration of several factors:

  1. Cost Efficiency: Continuing to print and mail the journal would result in a significant increase in production costs from the publisher which are outside of our control and are reflective of the changing academic publishing landscape. These costs would have been passed along to our members. By going digital, we can maintain membership fees at reasonable levels while continuing to provide the journal as a core benefit.
  2. Environmental Sustainability: Moving to a fully digital format aligns with ASTNA’s commitment to sustainability by reducing paper usage, energy consumption, and waste associated with print production.
  3. Enhanced Access: The digital platform offers a richer experience, allowing members to access the latest articles in press, view the most-cited and most-read research, and explore resources such as direct links to all five critical care transport associations—all in one convenient location at https://www.airmedicaljournal.com/.

By joining the growing number of professional associations that have transitioned to digital-only journal access, ASTNA continues to adapt to members' preferences and evolving needs. This is a move that is in alignment with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, who note: “Medical publishing contributes to carbon emissions that exacerbate climate change, which is an urgent threat to human well-being and planetary health. Editors, publishers, journal owners, and other stakeholders should work together to develop immediate strategies to reduce carbon emissions, with a goal toward achieving net zero carbon emissions.”

Details on how to access the journal online can be found below. We encourage you to explore the enhanced features of the digital platform and enjoy the convenience of accessing the Air Medical Journal anytime, anywhere.

Thank you for your continued membership and engagement with ASTNA.

Sincerely,

ASTNA Board of Directors
